Sleuthing duo head back to Middle Earth

Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch take a break from their Holmes and Watson adventures to star in the latest Hobbit instalment.

The sleuthing duo, who are currently taking the lead roles in hit BBC series ‘Sherlock’, feature in ‘The Hobbit: The desolation of Smaug’, the second in Peter Jackson’s trilogy of films adapting Tolkien’s masterpiece.

It continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves on an epic quest to reclaim the lost kingdom of Erebor from the dragon Smaug.

It will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday, with additional showings at 1.30pm over the weekend.

Judi Dench and Steve Coogan star in ‘Philomena’ tonight (Thursday) at 7.45pm.

It tells the story of a woman’s 50-year search for her son who was taken away for adoption when he was a toddler.

In ‘Fill the void’ on Monday at 7.45pm, 18-year-old Shira is pressured to marry the husband of her late sister, who died during childbirth.

On Wednesday evening, Daniel Auteuil adapts playwright Marcel Pagnol’s acclaimed Marseilles triology. The first film, ‘Marius’, is on at 7.45pm.
