Festive feast of top brass: Review by Dominic Brown

Hebden Bridge Brass Band

Hebden Bridge Brass Band

After watching the baggy greens of Australia turn England’s Ashes hopes to dust, the green jackets of Hebden Bridge Brass Band were a welcome boost to lift spirits.

While our cricketers are having a nightmare Down Under, the band’s dream year continued as they brought 2013 to a close with a cheery concert of festive music performed to a packed house at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Mytholmroyd, on Sunday evening.

The reigning Yorkshire area champions were on top form as, under the baton of musical director Jason Smith, they embarked on a ride through Christmas tunes old and new.

Despite having heard it on previous occasions, Santa Claus-trophobia - a medley of seasonal standards - still puts a smile on my face.

Hark The Herald Angels Sing was spine-tingling in the church setting.

The award-winning rendition of the Stingray theme tune, peformed with magnificent gusto, nearly took the roof off.

And Jason’s bad jokes even got a few laughs. The spirit of Christmas is truly upon us!
