A VANDAL climbed up the Christmas tree in St George’s Square, Hebden Bridge, before being arrested by police.

The incident happened at 3.13am on Saturday and the 21-year-old male culprit allegedly damaged most of the tree’s lights - meaning they were off until Monday.

Emma Housman, Neighbourhood Manager at Hebden Royd Town Council - which owns the lights, said: “It’s outrageous that people feel the need to damage something that is supposed to be for the town.”

A police spokesperson said: “A 21-year-old man has been arrested for criminal damage and on suspicion of possesing a Class B drug. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.”
