LOCAL environmental group, Treesponsibility, is putting an urgent call-out to local volunteers to help plant a backlog of trees after snow and ice wiped out January plantings.
Co-ordinator Penny Eastwood said: "We only managed to plant 224 trees last month because we had to cancel our New Year's Day event and a major planting weekend due to the harsh weather conditions.
"This means that we still have nearly 10,000 trees to get in the ground before March 31, in order to complete our sites at White Slack and Steanor Bottom.
"We have scheduled additional planting days every Wednesday and Thursday in February, as well as public weekend plantings on March 6, 7, 13, 14, and 20."
Morning pick ups can be arranged from Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Walsden.
"We also thought that there may be some groups or schools out there in Calderdale who would consider doing a '500 Tree Challenge' to raise money for Haiti," she said.
"That way we could get our trees planted at the same time as sending some money to where it is desperately needed."
Volunteers are requested to contact the group in advance on 01422 845418 or at treesponsibility@yahoo.
It is also advisable to ring on the day 07847 815 926 if the weather puts any event in doubt.
