One of Hebden Bridge's best loved characters, Reg Godwin, has died aged 55.
Reg, who was retail supervisor in the booking office at the local railway station and relief supervisor at Todmorden station, died in Overgate Hospice on Friday July 16 after a short illness.
He will be remembered for his friendly disposition, his
ever-cheerful outlook and for his love of helping passengers find the cheapest fare for a journey.
If you were travelling a distance, Reg would advise that two tickets to and from an intermediate point was considerably cheaper than a through booking. If there were alternative routes, he would advise on the best one. Reg personified personal service.
Regular passenger Rachel Wilson remembers Reg fondly. "He was always so helpful and friendly, and made a real difference to the feel of the station. He will be greatly missed."
Reg grew up in Surrey and started his railway career in the London area, but spent much of his adult life in the Calder valley, latterly in Sowerby Bridge.
His first posting in Yorkshire was as a shunter in Bradford, and his railway career progressed to his last posting. Reg was passionate about the importance of public transport to a sustainable community, but also appreciated the majesty of steam, and would always advise as to when a steam hauled special would be passing through the station.
A true member of the community, he was a great supporter of the Todmorden Station Gala and of the gardening done by the Friends of Hebden Bridge station.
Nina Smith, Chair of the Friends of Hebden Bridge Station: "Reg Godwin was a lovely man, one of nature's gentlemen. He has been sorely missed since he became ill earlier this year. The Friends send their deepest condolences to his family and friends."
Reg's funeral takes place at St Paul's Methodist Chapel, Tower Hill, Sowerby Bridge, on Monday August 2 at 2pm. All his friends and customers are welcome. Reg has requested that people dress colourfully. He has requested no flowers, but donations please to the Overgate Hospice.
