MAYOR-ELECT of Hebden Royd, Coun John Beacroft-Mitchell, is seeking to redraw the postal map of the Calder Valley.
Coun Beacroft-Mitchell who represents the Cragg Vale Ward is campaigning to have Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale added to the Royal Mail's UK postcode database. The database currently lists all postal addresses in postcode HX7 as being in Hebden Bridge.
If a Mytholmroyd or Cragg Vale resident applies for a new bank account or wants to book a courier, companies using the Royal Mail database tell them that they live in Hebden Bridge based on their postcode, said Coun Beacroft Mitchell.
"I have been approached by residents and businesses in Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale whose urgent parcels have been delayed or returned to sender because of mixups over the database.
"Both Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale have a close geographical and civic relationship with Hebden Bridge, but are separate communities with different characters and economic needs.
"It's time Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale were given their own localities within the HX7 postcode."
If the change is approved by Royal Mail and the Post Office regulators, all residents and businesses in Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale will be given the opportunity to vote both for and against the change.
The process to change the postcode database could take up to a year.
