More than six hundred photographs of local steps

WHY are the steps between Heptonstall Road and the main road at the bottom of Bridge Lanes, Hebden Bridge, known as the cuckoo steps?

That's one of the intriguing questions which has come to light as a result of the community photographic project, Stepping Out.

Over six hundred photographs have now been contributed to the project, which is encouraging local people to look out for flights of stone steps both in the upper Calder valley towns and in the surrounding countryside.

"We've had a fantastic response, and the photos are still coming in," said Richard Peters of Hebden Bridge Walkers Action, which is co-ordinating the project. "Several people have drawn attention to the fact that some flights of steps have their own names, but nobody seems to know why. Generations of Hebden Bridge people have walked the Cuckoo steps, for example, but someone must have originally given the steps their name.

“Other flights of steps with distinctive names include Cat Steps on both Mytholm Steeps and in Mytholrnroyd; Little Blackpool steps to Birchcliffe and Tinkling steps in Heptonstall. Hebden Bridge Walkers Action is keen to hear from any older residents who can name some of the other distinctive flights of steps locally.”

Richard adds: "These steps are part of our local heritage, and it's important to ensure their names are recorded."

The last date for contributing photos has been extended to Sunday July 8 and Hebden Bridge Walkers Action members are encouraging budding photographers to make the most of the forthcoming weekend to track down and photograph further flights of steps.

Photos can be submitted electronically from.hbwalkersaction.org.uk (follow the link to Stepping Out), or can dropped in to Mountain Wild or Studio Seven (Hebden Bridge), Milly's Cafe (Mytholmroyd), Shutterbugs (Todmorden), or the post offices in Heptonstall and Midgley.

All the photographs submitted, including those taken by local primary school children who have themselves been taking part in the project will be on public display later in July, in the Hebden Bridge festival shop in Albert Street.
