Laughs and fright in equal measure

The cast of Labyrinth

The cast of Labyrinth

An inclusive cast of year seven to Calder VI sixth form students present their comedic adaptation of the 1986 British-America fantasy film ‘Labyrinth’ this week.

The film, famously directed by Jim Henson - creator of ‘The Muppets’ - and produced by the great George Lucas, has now been transformed for the stage at Calder High’s Ted Hughes Theatre.

Exploiting skills learnt in their timetabled lessons, such as physical theatre and choreography of contemporary dance, students put on a show that has its roots firmly planted in the original film, but transcends what we have already seen on screen.

The show develops a sense of comedy that is both fitting and enhancing of the original film, achieving an end result that Henson and Lucas can only envy.

This is a developed production, from sound and lighting, to the live band playing both original music from the film along with students’ own compositions, to expertly performed creative choreography, and professional acting from students.

The lively, colourful and entertaining show kept the audience bubbling with laughter and gasping with fright.

The production’s opening performance on Tuesday was watched by an audience of young students from the high school’s feeder schools.

Also in the audience, making a special visit, was the Mayor of Calderdale, Coun Nader Fekri, who sat entertained from start to finish, if not startled at times by the production’s pyrotechnic explosions. After the curtains closed, he came backstage to speak with the cast of students.

“The show was absolutely marvellous; the whole ensemble, the singing, the dancing,” he said. “Once again, Calder High School has set itself an impossibly high standard, and exceeded it. There were genuine moments of suspense and fear. I really enjoyed it.”

Miss Hutt, head of expressive arts, said that the effort and dedication of the whole cast has been outstanding.

Headteacher Mrs Spillane said: “I am so proud of all that the staff and students have achieved. This is a wonderful show and a lovely end to the half term.”

l The final performance is tonight at 7pm. Tickets are available by calling 01422 883213.
