STROLLING down the red carpet at the fifth annual Volunteers Oscars ceremony last week were several Calder Valley groups.
Members of Oak, Upper Valley Extended Services, the Acorn Centre, Mytholmroyd Scout Group, the White Ribbon Campaign, Calder High School, Mytholmroyd Youth Club, Community Transport Calderdale and the Basement Project were among those given the Holyw
ood treatment at a special night organised by Voluntary Action Calderdale at Halifax's Victoria Theatre and hosted by the new Mayor of Calderdale, Coun Ann McAllister.
Around 500 people filled the theatre and the indications are that they had a simply smashing time!
Ten of the Oak Group, Todmorden, members made the journey down and described how they were greeted with fruit cocktails and goodie bags having walked along the red carpet.
It made it feel just like the famous film industry ceremony in Hollywood, with two entertainment spots and a buffet in the bar served up among the awards themselves.
The aim of the ceremonny is to recognise the service to the community provided by a wide range of groups which all enhance the quality of life for people in Calderdale.
Oak, for example, is now in its seconnd year, offering a wide range of activities for the over 50s including sequence and line dancing, a feelgood singing group, tai chi, craft classes, writing classes, yoga and a Friday drop-in at Central Methodist Church from 10am to 3pm.
