A RECORD entry in the arts and crafts section of Todmorden Show made it a year to remember.
Boosted in particular by a record number of entries in the children's classes, section secretary Anne Cryer was delighted even though some of the categories, such as flower arranging, saw a drop on last year.

"There have been a record number of entries in the children's classes - more than 1,000, which is really good. Judges have been quite impressed with the overall standard as well.

"We would thank everybody for their entries helping the arts and crafts tent to look marvellous with a colourful display of work," she said.

This year the Mrs Clewer Cup for most points gained by local exhibitors in the handicraft classes is being shared - Dorothy Laycock and Margaret Grant will hold the trophy for six months each.

The Mrs H. Temperley Cup for the most points gained in the baking class and the Alice and Jack Speak Trophy for best fruit cake were won by Geoff Uren.

The Trevor Cryer Trophy for best entry in the photographic classes was won by Graham Proudlove while the Dennon's Rose Bowl for best entry in the adult flowers classes went to Sadie Chaplin.

The Mrs P. Sunderland Cup for best exhibit in the art classes went jointly to Joyce Maguire and Cornholme School pupil Jack Firth. Joyce was delighted and it was the first time she had entered an exhibit and has been painting for just six months.

There was more success for Jack too, as he won the Mrs Greenwood Cup for best exhibit by a local boy.

In the children's classes, the Lloyds TSB Trophy for annual competition to be awarded to the local primary school scoring the most points went to Todmorden C of E School while the Calderdale Calligraphers' Trophy for the school gaining most points in the handwriting classes went to Shade School. The June Fern Cup for best entry in the children's handwriting classes went to Ailsa Haswell, of Castle Hill School.

The Mrs Lord Cup for best exhibit by a local girl went to Grace Greenwood of Shade School.
