CALDER Recordings are giving wannabe pop stars the chance to live the dream for a day at its newly expanded studios.
Thanks to a Calderdale Council business expansion grant the based studios at Top Land Country Business Park, Cragg Road, Mytholmroyd, on the way to Cragg Vale, can offer professional recording time, studio tours, educational talks and even the chance
for amateurs to lay down their own tracks.
Studio owner Steve Fenton, who currently lives in Greetland, but lived in Todmorden for seven years, said: "We got a grant from the council which enabled us to expand. It took about three months to do the expansion. We researched all the acoustics so we could get the best possible sound.
"We've recently been recording the Hebden Bridge Junior Brass Band's album and it's great to be able to accommodate all them people in one studio, which we're never previously able to do.
"We now have one of the best recording studios in the region thanks to the expansion. It's important for local bands, who no longer have to move all their gear to London or Manchester. The fantastic views we have here means people can get really creative and inspired to record great music.
"We now also do 'pop star for a day' sessions, which other studios do, but not at the same rates we can offer. These are popular with children and people who have been singing in clubs for years but have never had anything recorded. They come in and sing and their friends can sing backing vocals and we give them a professionally produced CD to take home with them.
Steve, who is married with two children, and is also a lecturer in music technology at Huddersfield University, opened the studios eight years ago and regrets that there was nothing similar when he was in his teens.
He added: "There was nothing like this when I was growing up. If there was I would have been in here all the time.
"We've got two work experience students coming later this year and we're now able to offer that on a regular basis. We'd also like to talk to community group leaders and see if we can tailor anything to them which they might find useful. Whether it's recording time, work experience a tour of the studio, learning how everything works - we're here to help."
A whole host of artists have used the studio in the past including; The Happy Monday's, Supertramp's John Helliwell , who is from Todmorden, with his band Crème Anglaise and more. However with the improved facilities Steve is hoping to attract more top producers, who he hopes will attract more top acts to the area.
