MORE than 50 people braved the snowy weather, including a number of youngsters and visitors from York, to hear the Enescu Ensemble play Wainsgate Chapel last Sunday afternoon.
A rapport was quickly established with the audience with the introduction and some explanation of the two pieces. The first four notes of Haydn's Quartet, The Rider are from Bach's Musical Offering Theme and occur more than once. The edition used was Playell's who was a student of Haydn and a favourite with Mozart.

In the tradition of Radio 3, Dave Nelson gave a short interval talk about Wainsgate Chapel and revealed the good news that the organ is to be repaired by the Historic Chapels Trust in the next few weeks.

The next quartet was Mendelssohn's A minor written when he was 18 years old. The third movement was a reflective Intermezzo rather than the more usual Minuet and Trio, which Simon Chalk, on second violin, suggested Mendelssohn had written because he probably felt "Minuets and Trios are so last century". The opening was also brought to the attention of the audience and described as "a musical hug". The other members of the Ensemble were Nick Stringfellow, James and Tamaki Dickenson playing cello, first violin and viola respectively. The musical conversations between the players were beautifully observed and a delight to hear in the marvellous acoustics of the chapel.

The Enescu Ensemble will be joined by Elle Hodgkinson to perform the Schumann Piano Quintet at a Hebden Bridge Arts Festival concert on July 12 at 1pm in Heptonstall Church.
