We can reach further thanks to generosity

A CLUB for people with physical disabilities can now bring more people to use its services thanks to generous help from a community group.
Hebden Bridge Round Table has helped Calder Valley Club, which offers services, friendship and travel to its members, buy a specially adapted car which can transport four passengers which include one wheelchair-bound passenger to and from its Burnley Road, Mytholmroyd, base and also take club members out on trips.
Earlier this year the Tablers promised to help and contributed £4,000 towards the cost, and the club have raised an additional £2,000 to buy the car, which is now used by members.
Club manager Pam Sharp said it meant people who could not previously get to the club could now access it.
“It means we can bring in people from outlying areas we have previously struggled to get to. We can also offer a more personalised transport service based on a ‘wish list’ - we can take members out to do things they want to do. A massive thanks goes to the Round Table. Two days a week we rely on the vehicle,” she said.
She explained that the club, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, has faced a number of funding issues it has had to overcome during the past 12 months, The problems came to a head when the groups offering respite day care for adults with physical disabilities – Scope, Calder Valley Club and Heath Stroke Club – were told they would need to re-apply for their council contracts.
All three contracts, generic, physical disabilities and stroke, were awarded to Scope so since June Calder Valley Club has returned to its roots and running under its own steam after having had the physical disabilities contract for around 18 years.
Mrs Sharp said despite that club members, who greatly value the services and friendship it offers, had stayed with it and were hoping to get direct payments to cover their costs.
The club is open to new members, either privately or by direct payment accessed through the council. The club also welcomes donations to help cover its costs. For more details, contact the club on 01422 885098.
