Spread the word - switch now

I AM writing to support Bear and the Transition Town group with their brilliant idea. Yes, yes, yes, as many people as possible in this area should switch to one of the green energy suppliers.

The time is now. Prices are totally competitive with polluting sources of energy. If we all switch at once, it sends a big message that consumers can make a difference.

Let’s not wait for the slow cogs of policy and regulation to turn this round for us. If as Bernard says, green sources have limited capacity, then we should get ours before anyone else does. The publicity and extra tourism generated from being the first town that switched will boost local jobs which are in tourism, not nuclear power generation.

As Bear pointed out in his article, this is not about putting windmills in sensitive areas and there are good arguments for sensible planning. Bernard may be right that nuclear power should carry the load where renewable supply and consumer demand cannot be brought together.

The UK needs to shed the obscene majority of its polluting fossil fuel generation and the one lever we as consumers can pull is to switch supplier. There are a few communities as conscious and as highly functional as those found around Hebden Bridge. We can exploit this advantage.

Spread the word. Switch now.
