BRITISH Transport Police (BTP) is investigating an incident of arson on a Northern Rail train on Sunday evening, October 5, which resulted in fire damage to a carriage.
The driver of the 1B29 Blackpool North to York service reported the incident at 7.22pm as the train was pulling in to Hebden Bridge railway station. Train staff informed West Yorkshire Police officers, who initially attended the scene, that youths had used tissue from the onboard toilet to start fires in the carriage.
Nobody was injured in the incident. Firefighters from Todmorden, Mytholmroyd and Halifax attended the scene and the train was allowed to continue.
Officers have recovered forensic evidence from the carriage and are conducting tests. BTP believe the youths alighted at Accrington railway station and are appealing for witnesses.
Anyone with information should contact BTP on Freefone 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. All calls will be treated in confidence.
