Jane Lumb was born in 1942 in the Calder Valley. She was the daughter of a mill owner called Herbert and died from breast cancer last month, aged 65.

The model struck to fame in the 1960’s but surprisingly it was her work in films that first shot her into the limelight.

In 1964 she played a martyred female in the Bond film Goldfinger, and has also stared in a number of Carry on films.

Jane also stared in A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and in the Rolling Stones promotional film for Ruby Tuesday.

But it was her pictures taken for the first Pirelli calendar that is the most striking memory for most.

It was in 1964 when cinematographer, Robert Freeman captured the beauty on a beach in Majorca.

Following the shoot Jane went on to become the first blonde to be the face of Fry’s Turkish Delight.

She was even on the cover of international magazines French and Italian Vogue as well as being at the front of many of Britain’s womens magazines.

She was one of the most iconic models of the 60s and was a firm favourite with photographers and many believed that Jane Lumb was the most celebrated face of the decade.

As a young girl she was sent to boarding school. The shy youngster gained four A Levels and won a place at Oxford to read English though she hedged her bets and moved to London where she soon fell in with the fashion set which included Joanna Lumley, Twiggy, Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa.

She lived in a flat off King’s Road, Chelsea with photographer David Bailey’s assistant Vic Singh.

There she drew in an eclectic crowd of friends and lodgers and was involved with the Hollies’ guitarist Tony Hicks before marrying musician manager, Tony Gourvish, in 1976.

Following the birth of her daughter Jane completed her English degree via an Open University course and went on to work in public relations where she worked with the likes of Showaddywaddy, Bay City Rollers and later represented restaurateur Anton Mosimann.
